Anxiety, Trauma & Life Transitions Therapy for Children, Teens, Adults & Couples

Rebecca Steen, AMFT, APCC

Associate Marriage and Family Therapist & Associate Professional Clinical Counselor at Coastal Therapy & Wellness

Hi, I’m Rebecca. Life can feel like a lot to carry, especially when anxiety, stress, or low mood start to feel constant. You might be doing your best to keep up with everything, while internally feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward.

In therapy, we’ll create space to slow things down and understand what’s really going on beneath the surface. Together, we’ll work through what’s been weighing on you, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and build practical tools that help you feel more grounded, steady, and in control.

I work with children, teens, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship challenges, and I love working with couples looking to strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and reconnect. I also support clients coping with chronic illness or pain, as well as those going through fertility or family-building journeys. I see clients in person in Seal Beach and online throughout California.

Clarity, Resilience, and a Steadier Way Forward

Lasting change starts with a safe place to slow down and look at what’s really going on beneath the surface.

When we understand the patterns that keep you feeling stuck, whether that’s anxiety, the weight of a health challenge, or a season of life asking more of you than you have to give, we can build the practical tools that help you feel more grounded, steady, and in control.

That relief doesn’t stay contained to our sessions. It carries into how you show up for the people around you, how you move through what’s next, and how much clarity, resilience, and self-trust you carry with you.

About Rebecca Steen, AMFT, APCC

My approach is integrative and individualized, tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals.

I take a psychodynamic and trauma-informed approach, exploring how past experiences, relationships, and attachment patterns continue to shape present thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Once we build insight into these patterns, I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) to help clients develop practical skills, increase psychological flexibility, and create meaningful, lasting change.

I also love working with couples navigating conflict, communication breakdowns, or feeling disconnected from one another. I draw on Gottman Method-informed tools alongside the same trauma-informed, attachment-focused lens I bring to individual work, helping partners understand old patterns and build new, healthier ways of relating.

When working with children, I incorporate play therapy to support emotional processing, encourage exploration, strengthen communication, and help kids build healthy coping skills in developmentally appropriate ways.

Therapy is a balance of insight and action, understanding where patterns come from while learning new ways to respond in the present. I strive to create a collaborative, supportive space where you feel both understood and gently challenged as you move toward a life that aligns with your values.

I see clients in person in Seal Beach and online throughout California.

My Approach to Anxiety, Trauma & Life Transitions

My clients often come to me carrying more than they realize, whether that’s anxiety, the weight of a health challenge, grief, or a life transition that’s changed everything.

My approach is integrative and individualized, grounded in psychodynamic and trauma-informed work and blended with ACT, CBT, DBT, and Trauma-Focused CBT. With younger clients, I bring in play therapy to meet them where they are. Together we build insight into where these patterns come from, and the practical skills to respond differently today.

The goal is a life that feels more aligned with your values, and the steadiness to meet whatever comes next.

Your First Steps

What You Can Expect When We Work Together

A Thoughtful Start

Reaching out can feel like the hardest step, but you don't have to navigate it alone. You'll first connect with our Client Care Coordinator, who will answer your questions, learn more about what you're looking for, and help determine whether I'm the right fit. They'll then help you schedule your first appointment or a consultation call if you'd like to connect first.

A Personalized Approach

Our first sessions are about understanding you, not rushing to solutions. We'll explore what's been feeling difficult, what you hope will feel different, and begin creating a plan tailored to your goals, strengths, and unique experiences. There is no one size fits all approach.

Therapy That Evolves With You

As therapy progresses, we'll continue adapting our work to meet your needs. Some sessions may focus on practical skills, while others involve deeper work through approaches like CBT, DBT, or play therapy, depending on what fits best. I also regularly check in to make sure therapy feels helpful, meaningful, and aligned with your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy With Rebecca Steen, AMFT, APCC

What types of clients do you work with?

Children (5+), adolescents, and adults, including individuals and couples. I work with children and teens navigating anxiety, emotional or behavioral challenges, life transitions, grief, or difficulties with emotional regulation, as well as adults living with chronic illness or chronic pain, anxiety, trauma, burnout, or major life transitions. I also work with healthcare professionals and other helping professionals.

Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes, and it's an area I especially love working in. I help couples strengthen communication, work through conflict, and reconnect, drawing on Gottman Method-informed tools alongside a trauma-informed, attachment-focused approach.

How do I know if therapy with you is the right fit?

Finding the right therapist matters. My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to you. During our first conversation, we'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy, what relief or change you're hoping for, and whether working together feels like the right fit.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Our first session is about understanding where you are right now, whether that's a specific stress, a health challenge, or something rooted further back, and starting to build a plan around what brings you relief and growth.

How often should I attend therapy?

Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially early on. As we build relief and clarity together, we'll check in and adjust the frequency to match where you're at.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Yes. I see clients in person at our Seal Beach office, and I also offer online sessions throughout California for those who prefer telehealth.

Do you work with children as well as adults?

Yes. I work with children age 5 and up, teens, and adults, and I incorporate play therapy with younger clients to help them process and communicate in developmentally appropriate ways.

Do you accept insurance?

I'm an out-of-network provider. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.

What makes your approach different?

It blends psychodynamic, trauma-informed work with practical, skills-based therapies like ACT, CBT, DBT, and TF-CBT. It's a balance of insight and action, so change feels both understood and doable.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Starting therapy can feel like a big decision, but you don't have to navigate it alone. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or ready for meaningful change, I invite you to reach out and explore whether working together feels like the right fit.
